BEEF PRODUCERS ENCOURAGED TO VOTE IN POLL

The Nationals Senator for New South Wales John Williams is giving beef producers a chance to have their say on the Rudd Government’s decision to allow the importation of beef products from countries that have had mad cow disease outbreaks.

In a Senate Estimates hearing the Managing Director of Meat and Livestock Australia David Palmer gave a stark picture of the damage that can be caused from an outbreak of disease.

When asked by Senator Williams what damage would be caused to beef exports if mad cow disease was detected in Australia, Mr Palmer said he couldn’t quantify a figure, but based on modelling on foot and mouth disease it would be billions of dollars.

“This figure is extremely frightening for the future of the beef industry in Australia.

While some industry bodies are supporting the importation of beef from disease affected countries, the grass roots producers are totally against it but their voices aren’t being heard.

Senator Williams said a poll has been established on his website asking people whether they agree with the Government Decision.

“I urge producers and those concerned about this decision to vote in the poll and the results will be forwarded to Minister Burke Senator Williams said.

The poll can be found at www.johnwilliams.com.au

Dear Senator John
I was appauled to hear that Tony Bourke? Nicola ? and Simon Crean had made the decision to import beef from countries with Mad Cow Disease. I think they must have the disease [in their minds] to bring this product into Australia. We have had thousands of people on the land gop to the wall in Citrus, Dairying, Grape Production etc because of STUPID BEAUOCRACY GONE MAD.
Also the immense INCAPABILITY of CONSECUTIVE LABOUR GOVERNMENTS OVE R THE LAST 50 YEARS TO MAKE STUPID FINANCIAL DECISIONS THAT HAVE RAPED OUR ECONOMY - LIFESTYLE - AND PEACE
You have my support and vote to get rid of Rudd and SWAN - black duck I call him - because it will take decades of careful financial management to get our country debt free again.
About climate change {WHY dosent someone talk to the old people about HEAT _ DROUGHTS _ BUSHFIRES _ Ect. when I came to Australia in 1955 I picked grapes my first summer and it stayed at 106 degrees farenite for 10 weeks, {CLIMATE CHANGE - RUBISH]

I can't believe that any-one would even think of such a idea.Does this government really employ people who think that this is in the best interest of Australia's people.
If that is so please arrange for them to be sacked!

I am absolutely disgusted with the Federal Government. The importing of overseas beef products is totally unthinkable. If this occurs, I will become a vegetarian and you may be sure I will never, ever vote for the Labour Party. I cannot believe that the newspapers have not picked up on this matter but as usual they are mainly left wing Socialist papers. I also noted there is not time for any debate as overseas countries can lodge their applications to import beef products from the 1st March 2010. And they say we live in a democracy. Hail Chairman Rudd!!!!!!!

Hi John, I was listening to Leon Byner on Adelaide radio last week when he interviewed you. I have been aware of Leon's campaign for some weeks now and I also am appalled at the outrageous pronouncements of the labour politicians involved.

For this matter to get to public notice by accident really does show the public service for what it is "a law unto themselves" what planet do they live on, or how many research trips were needed to the CJD affected countries for the bureaucrats to provide advice to government that would satisfy the needs of multi national companies promoting the importation of beef from "Mad Cow Affected" countries.

As has been mentioned by many, any risk, no matter how small is a huge risk for Australia, it's population from a health perspective and just as importantly from a trade perspective. There are many countries that would stop purchasing our beef products in a heart beat if we relented. Maybe our beef marketers need to get their collective fingers out and get the story out to the world OUR PRODUCT IS "MAD COW DISEASE FREE" 100% GUARANTEED. If that is not worth a real price premium I don't know what is.

THE QUESTION IS "WHO STARTED THIS CRAZINESS AND WHY" WE ALL NEED TO KNOW AND WE SHOULD ALL BE DEMANDING AN ANSWER SO THE PERPETRATORS CAN BE OUTED -- OVER TO YOU JOHN LETS SEE THE ANSWERS IN HANSARD.

I am totally disgusted, the government are suppost to look after our country. Instead they are selling us out. I have friends who have lost relatives as a result of mad cow, If this meat is imported to Australia I pray that Crean, Butler and Nicola are the 1st to contract the disease. Every one will be at risk, who knows what meat goes into some of our takeaway meals. Its about time Rudd stops prancing around the world trying to big note himself got some guts and said NO to the multinationals who are running the country at the moment.

Hi John.I am appalled at the stupidity of this government's action in opening our markets to BSE infected countries. There are no circumstances where this can be justified but to do it without requiring a trace back system at least asstringent as our own NLIS is ludicrous. This action would seem to suggest that that the beef industry had NLIS imposed on it at great expense for no purpose. This whole debacle appears to be yet another scheme to knock off another one of Australia's primary industries without regard for domestic or global food supplies

When will the Federal Govt stop crawling at the feet of the rest of the world and stand up for Australian producers? MLA needs to make a stand against this significant threat to beef exports. What are the levies for?!
