Tomorrow (Friday) is a milestone in Australian politics as the Federal Nationals celebrate their 90th anniversary.
It was on this date in 1920 the Australian Country Party was formed as a party in the Federal Parliament, and since that date representation has been unbroken. Today the party, known as The Nationals, continues its fight for regional Australians and its newest Senator John Williams says there is much to be proud of. "From the nation's first radio broadcasting licences in 1923, through to the establishment of the University of New England in the 1950's and latterly the rejection of the Emissions Trading Scheme, this party has delivered. The challenges facing this nation do not get any easier and we have never backed down on issues affecting those we represent, and today more than ever we have to stand firm against Labor's wanton disregard for regional Australia. As I travel around the country I talk to more and more people who now see The Nationals as their only voice, the only ones who understand, the only ones who will listen. We won't let them down. Whilst some of our cricketers have had trouble in the 90's this summer, The Nationals are batting on to a century and beyond", Senator Williams said. ENDS |
