Families and businesses in regional Australia now have a clear choice on climate change action with the release of the Coalition’s new “Rewarding a Greener Australia” policy, according to New South Wales’ two Nationals senators Fiona Nash and John Williams.

Senator Nash said a system based on incentives rather than penalties would encourage regional industries to be part of the solution rather than having to downsize or move overseas under the Rudd ETS model.

“Farmers and landholders will effectively be paid for environmental improvements on their properties, and this will be achieved without Kevin Rudd’s massive new tax,” Senator Nash said.

Senator Williams said the choice facing regional Australia to achieve a five per cent emissions reduction was a $3.2 billion painless Coalition plan over four years or a $40 billion Labor tax over four years with massive job losses and skyrocketing food and energy price rises.

“Yes, $3.4 billion compared to $40 billion!”

“This is a big win for regional Australia, it is a win for the Nationals, but most of all it is a win for common sense,” Senator Williams said.

Senator Nash predicted householders would welcome their opportunity to be part of the solution with an extra $1000 rebate for either solar panels or solar hot water systems.

“Our aim is 1 million additional solar energy roofs by 2020, while all that residents can expect from Labor is extra cost of living pressures in direct contradiction to Mr Rudd’s election promises,” she said.

Senator Williams said the Coalition’s “Once in a Century Replenishment of Soils” program would not only neutralise carbon emissions but also improve soil quality, water efficiency and farm productivity.
