The Member for New England Tony Windsor continues to confuse his electorate on just where he stands on the Emissions Trading Scheme, according to The Nationals Duty Senator for New England John Williams. Senator Williams said Mr.Windsor today voted with the Coalition against the legislation when it went through the House of Representatives, but not before supporting amendments moved by the Member for Lyne Rob Oakeshott which would have had a harsh impact on the coal industry and forced household and business costs higher.Mr.Windsor is on record supporting tough emission cuts. “In November 2008 Mr.Windsor introduced a Private Members Bill calling for greenhouse gas emission cuts of at least 30 percent below 1990 levels by 2020, and at least 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050. Fortunately this Bill lapsed, but one could only imagine the impact these cuts would have had on jobs, industries and the household budget in New England. Mr.Windsor needs to understand what The Nationals have been saying for 12 months – the Rudd Scheme is a big new tax. Perhaps he should also study the Coalition’s Direct Action Policy which will not cost New England families money and is not a risk to jobs, but is a positive for the environment. People in New England must be rightfully wondering what Mr. Windsor does stand for”, Senator Williams said.
