BINDAREE BEEF EMPLOYEES UNITED ON MEAT IMPORTS

The Nationals Senator for New South Wales John Williams has presented letters of protest against beef imports to the Prime Minister and three senior Ministers.

One hundred and sixty-one employees of the Inverell-based meat processor Bindaree Beef have signed letters expressing concern at the imports which they say could cost their industry more jobs.

The employees cite the pork industry as an example of what will happen to the meat industry.

When Australian began importing Danish and Canadian pork, prices for Australian pork dropped and many piggeries were forced out of business.

The Bindaree Beef employees said if the Rudd Government truly represents workers and what’s best for this country, it would revisit the decision and protect their jobs and Australia’s reputation as the world’ cleanest and greenest supplier of beef by not allowing imports.

Senator Williams has presented the letters to the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Agriculture MinisterTony Burke, Health Minister Nicola Roxon and Trade Minister Simon Crean.
