On Anzac Day, 2010, Senator Williams led a group to the commemoration ceremonies at Hellfire Pass on the Thai Burma Railway and Kanchanaburi War Cemetery. Accompanying him was 87 years old Cliff Lowien of Yamba, a man who had been a prisoner of war working on the railway in 1943. Cliff had been captured in Singapore at the age of 17, and after the railway was completed he was taken back to Japan to work in the coalmines. This year he returned to Hellfire Pass for the first time. The photograph above shows (l to r) Jeff Lowien (son), Cliff Lowien, Senator Williams and Senator Guy Barnett at Hellfire Pass the day prior to Anzac Day. Both Senators laid wreaths on behalf of the President of the Senate at the commemoration services.
