| Veterans and ex-service people in New England will benefit from Saluting their Service grant funding according to the Nationals Duty Senator for New England John Williams.Six groups will share in almost $19,000 worth of grants. Glen Innes RSL Sub-Branch has received $4,000 to install 36 bronze plaques in Anzac Park to commemorate the 36 battles in which Australia has taken part; Liverpool Plains Shire Council has also received $4,000 to erect a new memorial in Anzac Square Park at Quirindi to commemorate post Second World War conflicts.$3,000 will be used by McCrossin's Mill Museum at Uralla to assist with the establishment of a display of wartime memorabilia commemorating Corporal Cecil Stoker who was a local soldier killed in action in France in 1918, and $2,918 has been provided for Ruth Rae Consultancies at Tamworth to publish the 1914-18 diaries of Fred Tomlins from the 1st Australian Light Horse.Tingha RSL Sub-branch will use its $2,310 to upgrade its Memorial Gardens, and the Korea War Veterans Association of NSW has been successful in obtaining funding to install a plaque on the Inverell War Memorial.“Saluting Their Service grants aim to highlight the service and sacrifice of Australia’s servicemen and women in wars, conflicts and peace operations.“The grants also promote appreciation and understanding of the role that those who have served have played in shaping the nation.However, I am concerned that funding cut backs at the Australian War Memorial, in particular, may jeopardise commemorations at a national level, "Senator Williams said. |
