| The Labor and Greens-aligned Independent Member for New England Tony Windsor believes the issue of same sex marriage is of greater interest to his electorate than which side of politics is running Australia.
That is the only conclusion that can be drawn by Mr. Windsor’s decision to seek the views of his electorate on same sex marriage according to The Nationals Senator for New South Wales John Williams. Senator Williams said just two months ago Mr. Windsor made arguably the biggest call of his career when he decided to put the Gillard Labor -Greens alliance into power. “Did he seek guidance from his constituents throughout New England as to which way he should lean? No he did not. He pushed for the Productivity Commission study into carbon emissions policies, but will he support the Opposition call for the Productivity Commission to conduct a cost-benefit analysis for the $43 billion National Broadband Network? No he will not. The NBN is Australia’s biggest infrastructure project to be built with borrowed money, but the Member for New England will not go back and ask the people of Tamworth, Armidale, Inverell, Glen Innes. Guyra, Tenterfield, Gunnedah and smaller districts if they believe it needs further scrutiny. But the Greens come knocking on the door on gay marriage and Mr.Windsor will run off to his constituents for guidance. One can only assume he did not survey his electorate as to whether he should put the Labor-Greens alliance or the Coalition into Government in September because he would not have liked the answer. The Member for New England is playing populist politics and lacks leadership”, Senator Williams said.
