NSW Regional Dentistry Scholarship 2010 Report – Olivia Jom

With the first University year at end, looking back throughout the year, the  has given me so much more than I what I had originally envisioned.

Senator John Williams’ generous contribution to my studies throughout the year has enabled me to soar through my first year at university with peace of mind, confidence and a constant network of support. The scholarship has also provided me with mentoring support from Dr Chris Cole, who is based in Armidale. Dr Cole’s contribution to my learning experience as a dental student has been invaluable. From Dr Cole, I was able to come into contact with dental practitioners and specialists from my local area in Albury, NSW. Observing and consulting with experienced rural dentists and specialists has had a significant impact on my learning experience as a dentistry student. Whilst being able to gain insight into experiences in the rural dental workforce, I was also privileged to have the generous and genuine support from these dentists, all year round. Their words of wisdom as well as empathy from shared experiences, has given me the backbone of support and trust I needed to get through my first University year. Through the scholarship, the support which I have been privileged with, both throughout this year and into the future has made me even more determined to work in regional NSW when I graduate and help to make a difference in the dental field, in these communities. The scholarship has opened my mind to the broad career opportunities available in rural communities. I would sincerely like to thank Senator John Williams, Dr Chris Cole and the dental practitioners in my local area for their kindness, help and contribution this year and their support. I would also like to encourage other students to apply for the scholarship as it gives you a professional support basis beyond what you are normally provided with in your first year of University. And in addition, that trustful support network will always be available to you even after the scholarship year has ended.
