STATEMENT ON NSW AND QUEENSLAND FLOODING

Like most Australians out of the flood zones I have been transfixed by the television images of the devastation caused by the floods along the east coast and inland.

I will never forget Toowoomba's "tsunami" which flung vehicles and property out of its way, and the pictures of the inundation in places like Rockhampton, Dalby, Ipswich, Brisbane and now along the NSW north coast at Grafton and downstream.

My sincere sympathies to the families of those who have lost their lives in this catastrophe, and we can only hope and pray that those still reported missing will turn up safe.

Realistically though, I fear more loss of life.

The people of the Clarence Valley on the north coast are now taking action to minimise damage from a swollen Clarence River, and above all, I urge them to follow the authorities advice and evacuate if directed.

And it goes without saying that motorists should not attempt to drive through floodwaters, as lives have been needlessly lost.

It is a trying time for many thousands of our fellow Australians.

The nation's thoughts are with you.

Donations to the Queensland Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal may be made at the major banks.
