The arrival this week of Chinese apples in Australia is a timely reminder that our farmers need the support of consumers more than ever.

The Nationals Senator for New South Wales John Williams said the big problem facing the Australian apple industry is the cost of production. Now they are expected to compete against countries like China where their workers are paid a pittance in comparison to Australian wages.

How can Australian producers compete? There is no such thing as a level playing field in international trade, and Australian apple growers are now facing this imbalance.

Senator Williams said Australian apple growers are well known for the high quality of their produce and consumers know they are eating a healthy, safe product.

"I note that Coles and Woolworths have publicly stated they will not be stocking the Chinese apples. I hope in the case of Woolworths they stick to their word, because in the 1990's they back flipped on their commitment not to stock imported pig meat.

The big two are on notice to support Australian apple growers", Senator Williams said.
