Residents in the New England electorate should be asked for their views on a carbon tax by the man whose vote could decide whether it gets through the House of Representatives. The Nationals Senator for New South Wales John Williams says the Member for New England Tony Windsor needs to poll his electorate, although he might not like what he is told. This is in the wake of a snap poll conducted by an Inverell radio station in Mr. Windsor’s electorate today where 98% of respondents said NO to a carbon tax. “Mr. Windsor has just sent out a survey form to his constituents. He seeks a yes or no answer on 18 issues including same sex marriage and euthanasia, but there is no mention of carbon tax. He claims in a press release issued following last week’s announcement that there is no carbon tax which is in direct contrast to what the Prime Minister and the Greens are saying. The Member for New England is all at sea on this matter. In 2008 he attempted to introduce his Climate Protection Bill calling for a 30% reduction on 1990 levels by 2020, and 80% below 1990 levels by 2050, claiming it was what the people wanted. Well now is his chance to find out once and for all whether they agree with a carbon tax, and the only way he can do that is to poll them. As the self-proclaimed people’s representative he should do nothing less”, Senator Williams said. |
