VETERANS GRANTS IN NEW ENGLAND

Veterans and ex-service people in Gunnedah will benefit from Saluting Their Service grant funding, the Nationals Duty Senator for New England John Williams has announced.

Saluting Their Service grants aim to highlight the service and sacrifice of Australia's servicemen and women in wars, conflicts and peace operations.

Senator Williams said Gunnedah Shire Council will receive $3,000.

"The funding is to help publish a book titled To Fight and Do Our Best written by Cate Clark. It is a history of the First Australian Armoured Division's time in Gunnedah, Narrabri and North West NSW during 1942-43.

These grants promote appreciation and understanding of the role that those who have served have played in shaping the nation.

I am pleased the funds are still available to assist veterans' organisations in our local community, especially as we approach the 96th anniversary of the ANZAC landing.

However, I am concerned that the Gillard Labor Government is yet to establish a budget to fund commemorative events associated with the Centenary of the Anzac landing in 2015.

Many organisations in New England still don’t know whether there will be any financial assistance available to help with local commemorative events that will allow local communities to be involved", Senator Williams said.
