LET'S NOT FORGET ANZAC DAY

Anzac Day is one week away and the Nationals Senator for New South Wales John Williams is reminding people not to forget the significance of the day amongst the Easter holiday break.

Senator Williams said if people are holidaying they could check out if there is a dawn service and Anzac march in the area and support them.

He said this year's Anzac activities are even more significant than normal.

"Sunday the 24th of April marks the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong in the Korean War.

Chinese forces had launched a major offensive against United Nations forces defending the South Korean capital, Seoul. The following morning the 27th British Commonwealth Brigade which comprised the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment was ordered to the valley of the Kapyong River to assist South Korean forces who were being driven back.

On the 24th of April, 1951, the Australians supported by a Canadian battalion and New Zealand artillery regiment stalled the Chinese advance before withdrawing after dark. They lost 32 men in the fierce battle but inflicted over 500 casualties on the Chinese.

The 3 RAR received a Presidential Citation for its gallantry.

This month also marks the 70th anniversary of the Siege of Tobruk and the Battle of Greece.

Events such as these are part of Australia's development as a nation. Next Monday the 25th is the ideal time to remember them", Senator Williams said.
