DEADLINE FOR YOUTH ALLOWANCE SUBMISSIONS LOOMING

Parents, educators and students are being urged to make a submission to a review which is considering the Federal Government's Income Support Arrangements.

The Nationals Duty Senator for New England John Williams says the Government has agreed to bring forward its review centreing around the independent youth allowance after concerted pressure from the Nationals Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Education Senator Fiona Nash and Shadow Education Minister Christopher Pyne.

Senator Williams said the Coalition has won concessions for students in areas such as Inverell, Glen Innes and Gunnedah to make it easier for them to access youth allowance, but the Government backed by the Greens and New England Independent Tony Windsor has refused to offer the same hope for students in Armidale and Tamworth.

"This should be about equality for all regional students, not where you live. Why should a student in Armidale or Tamworth have to seek work for an average 30 hours a week for up to 2 years to qualify for independent youth allowance, when a student just down the road only has to work for 15 hours a week for at least two years or earn $19,500 since leaving school?

I urge all parents and educators, particularly those in Armidale and Tamworth, to make a submission by this Thursday the 28th of April.

A roundtable will be held in Tamworth on the 6th of May in the Attunga Room at the All Seasons Hotel between 10.30am and 12.30pm, and people wishing to attend should contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ", Senator Williams said.

My older daughter is at University studying full time and is recieving a Youth Allowance of $200.00 per week. She was able to be eligible for Youth allownce by working for 18months and earning $18,000.00.
My youngest daughter left schoool in 2009, has worked from November 2009 to January 2011 and is now in full time study in Newcastle. She is not elegible for youth allownce as for some of that time she was travelling overseas and did not work the 30 hours per week for 18 months even though she has earn't more than $18,000.00.
We feel that it is quite unfair that rules were changed to descriminate against Country kids studying away from home. We greatly appreciate the assistance my older daughter recieves as with out it we may have had to ask our younger daughter to work for anther year before taking up study. It seems that the new rules are there to discourage country kids from further education.
Surely if they have worked to earn the $18,000.00 they are independant. I know my daughter sees herself that way. To have to come back and ask her parents for money each week is frustrating.
