| The Transport Workers Union today described the proposed carbon tax as a death tax for the transport industry.
Giving evidence to the Senate Select Committee on the Scrutiny of New Taxes hearing into the carbon tax pricing mechanisms, TWU Federal Secretary Tony Sheldon expressed grave fears for the wellbeing of his members. The Nationals Senator for New South Wales John Williams who is a member of the Senate Select committee said Mr. Sheldon made it clear the carbon tax would load more costs onto the transport industry and many owners and drivers would have to work harder and longer just to remain viable. He said Mr. Sheldon believed they would spend less time and money on truck maintenance and that potentially could be fatal. "Here is a union that has put concerns for its members ahead of its affiliation with the Labor Party. Mr. Sheldon's worries are valid because transport operators face a daily struggle with ever-increasing costs. Whilst Prime Minister Gillard is turning a deaf ear to the majority of Australians who don't want a carbon tax, perhaps she will now take notice of the TWU which has broken ranks with the government on this toxic tax", Senator Williams said. |
