| Cutbacks at the Wingham Abattoir and millions of dollars of extra charges for the Inverell-based Bindaree Beef reinforces the need to immediately drop the carbon tax, according to the Nationals Senator for New South Wales John Williams.
Senator Williams said Wingham Abattoir has stood down 85 casual employees because of the high Australian dollar and shortage of stock and is doing everything to remain sustainable. He said Bindaree Beef, in evidence to the Senate inquiry in Tamworth this week, estimated the carbon tax will add $2.74 million to its expenses in 2012-13. "In the case of these two abattoirs they are already burdened with industry charges and levies but face a carbon tax that will put up electricity charges by 10 percent and gas charges by 9 percent from next July. They must also factor in an increase in diesel charges in three years time. Ironically, both are in electorates represented by Independents Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor who stopped listening long ago to any concerns their constituents may have. They preach the Labor-Greens line that 9 out of 10 households will be compensated, but ignore the pleas from business. With the world financial markets taking a battering and major countries in debt crisis, a carbon tax will simply burden business with more costs in tough economic times. Mr. Oakeshott and Mr.Windsor should take off their green-coloured glasses for the good of the nation", Senator Williams said. |
