30th August, 2011

Letter to the Editor

Dear Sir,

I know the actions of the Member for New England Tony Windsor in recent times have been puzzling to many people in the electorate. After reading an article in the Northern Daily Leader (Page 3) on the 24th of August, put me down as one of the confused. Prior to the announcement of the carbon tax details on the 10th of July, Mr. Windsor deflected calls for him to poll his electorate because in his words "there is no carbon tax". This is despite him being part of the multi-party commmitee that was obviously working on a carbon tax. Mr. Windsor did survey his electorate on same sex marriage, yet he is quoted in the NDL on the 24th of August ( in relation to same sex marriage) "There is no issue at the moment, just the presumption that something is going to happen". So if I understand it correctly, it is fine for Mr. Windsor to survey the people of New England on same sex marriage even though it is not an issue, but he won't survey the same people on the carbon tax because it is not an issue. But wait there's more. Mr. Windsor is quoted in the same article (on same sex marriage) as saying he would "ascertain the feelings of the electorate before deciding which way he would vote on the issue". Yet he won't do the same on the carbon tax, the most important matter facing the nation. It is up to you as a resident of New England  to decide if Tony Windsor is treating you with contempt.

Yours sincerely,

Senator John Williams

The Nationals Senator for New South Wales.
