The electorates of the two rural Independents backing the carbon tax have made a last-ditch plea for their Members to change their mind and vote it down.
That is the result of the carbon tax survey conducted by The Nationals Duty Senator for the New England and Lyne electorates John Williams. Senator Williams distributed 119,000 survey forms into the electorates, and has received 8,884 formal responses. In New England, 4408 people or 89% said they were against the carbon tax and 539 were in favour. The largest response came from Tamworth where 1210 of the 1420 respondents don't want a carbon tax, and Inverell residents are even more determined with 775 or 94% of those returning forms rejecting the tax. In the Lyne electorate, 3,937 returned forms of which 3,433 or 87% are opposed to the carbon tax. Biggest objection was in Port Macquarie where 1,411 of the 1,616 respondents are opposed. Senator Williams said this is a clear message to the Independents Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott. "Mr. Windsor and Mr. Oakeshott now have the facts and figures they feared and can no longer hide from. The people they represent are overwhelmingly against a carbon tax. Their constituents have spoken and they are telling both men they don't support a carbon tax and it should be voted down. It is now in their hands", Senator Williams said.
