The Nationals Duty Senator for New England John Williams has issued a last-minute request to the Member for New England Tony Windsor to walk away from the carbon tax he helped design. Senator Williams said Mr. Windsor is swimming against the tide in his electorate as evidenced by the huge NO vote in Senator Williams’ carbon tax survey. He said responses continue to pour into his office, with 4,703 households in New England wanting Mr. Windsor to vote it down, and just 539 supporting his stand. Senator Williams was a member of the Senate Select Committee on the Scrutiny of New Taxes which has just handed down its report on the carbon tax. “It found that the carbon tax will have significant adverse effects on particular sectors and regions, with a disproportionate impact on regional Australia. “The committee reported that the government’s modelling was based on a number of highly contestable assumptions. If Mr. Windsor wants to be remembered as the peoples’ representative, this Wednesday is his chance to prove it when the carbon tax legislation is voted on. He must heed their message”, Senator Williams said. |
