AUSTRALIA POST’S RECORD PROFIT DOES NOT HELP SMALL COMMUNITIES

The Nationals Duty Senator for New England John Williams has demanded Australia Post step in and see what can be done to save the Bundarra Post Office.

In Senate estimates, Senator Williams told Australia Post Chief Executive Ahmed Fahour that the record profit of $241 million means nothing to small communities like Bundarra which is set to lose its licensed post office from the end of December.

Senator Williams has been working with the licensee for some months trying to find another revenue stream but all efforts have been unsuccessful.

Mr. Fahour said Australia Post is losing money on letters but making money on parcels and now has more post shops operating than 12 months ago.

Senator Williams said whilst that is good for Australia Post, it doesn’t help small communities and they should not be cast aside.

Mr. Fahour agreed to consider if anything can be done for Bundarra, and Senator Williams will make immediate representations.
