Despite the images of flooding rains in some parts of Australia, people should not be fooled into thinking the drought is
over.
Far from it. Because for every farmer now rejoicing that the heavens have finally opened up and given them cause for optimism, there are many more who have either had just a few millimetres or none at all.
The Nationals Senator for New South Wales John Williams said he hopes the fundraising efforts being held in city and regional communities will not lose impetus, because assistance is still badly needed.
“I’m particularly pleased to read that Woolworths will make a donation of food and fuel vouchers of $250,000, and will match dollar for dollar donations by customers at its stores.
I have been a vocal critic of Woolworths on a number of fronts including their fuel discount vouchers, but on this occasion I am happy to pat them on the back and say ‘well done’.
The Commonwealth Bank has also donated $50,000 to the appeal.
Just this morning I spoke with a young farmer who is in desperate straits with no income, growing debt and little hope, but thankfully his bank is now looking at ways to get him over his crisis. Once it rains he will be back on his feet.
There is no doubt many are in a similar situation.
Governments, both Federal and State, can only do so much to support our rural sector through this natural disaster, and I applaud everyone who is pitching in to help”, Senator Williams said.
